Rajesh Nayak won the individual title in the Utkal University Inter-College Chess Tournament, which concluded at Madhu Sudan Law College here today. Student of Nimapara College, Nayak finished at the top of the table with 6.5 points out of a possible seven.
Baivab Mishra (SCS College Puri, 6.5), Johnson Sahu (PG Vanivihar, 6.5), Sumit Banerjee (MS Law College, 6.5) and Tejas Bhargav (Birla Global Institute, 6) occupied the second to fifth positions in the descending order. The top-five finishers qualified to represent Utkal University in the Inter-University Chess Tournament, scheduled to be held at KIIT University, Bhubaneswar from October 9, 2016.
Earlier, BJB College, Bubaneswar and Imarti Devi Womens’ College, Cuttack emerged team champions in men and women categories respectively. BJB College topped the table with eight points from four rounds in men’s category. SCB Medical College, Cuttack and Christ College, Cuttack ended second and third respectively.
In women’s section, host M S Law College finished runners-up, while Christ College occupied the third position. Altogether 114 players including 17 women from 30 colleges participated in the three-day tournament, which was inaugurated by retired Justice A S Naidu. M S Law College hosted the tournament for the 20th time in a row. Utkal University Sports Council director Prof Jayant Kumar Parida handed over the prizes in the closing function.
